16a: crown of pelican not moving beak at the top.I have what I believe is the answer but what on earth has a pelican got to do with it?

From the entry for 'pelican' in Chambers: "an alembic with beaks that lead back to the body, used for continuous distillation".

itsme - Your penultimate 'o' should be 'n'. A 5 letter word meaning, 'of a part of the ear' inside a common 5 letter word for noise (2wrds 4,6)

Could someone explain why the solution to 8dn appears to be the Latin name for a particular legume which does not appear as a separate entry in Collins. Is this allowable?

It does appear in Chambers, which is the dictionary recommended in the footnote to the puzzle.

I meant to say Chambers. What I mean is that there is no separate entry for it. It only appears at the end of the entry for the English name of the legume in the edition of Chambers which I use (12th). There are loads of Latin words in the explanatory etymologies in Chambers but should they be allowed just because they make a physical appearance in Chambers?
