Thanks, Syzygy. (Almost) finished, and I know the final words, but...I only have 14 missing letters.
The one I can't find is an A, and it must be in the early across clues. I already have one A from 11a.

Glad I could help, Mattrom. I really enjoyed this puzzle, but was slightly disappointment that it wasn't strictly necessary to follow the actual instructions for putting in the 15 letters. A bit of scrambling showed what was required!
