These clues and answers were found in a NY Times puzzle of 2004 by James M. and James C. Jenista:

disappointing election results = lowtsrings
discovery of Galileo = satouts
(the t's crossed in the puzzle)
gripping read = pagetback
resolute advice to the hesitant = dontter
(the t's crossed in the puzzle)
rights shouldn't be taken from it = leftttooz
1985 sequel to a classic 1939 film = retlane
(the t's crossed in the puzzle)
slight indication = uptal
like bats = noctednose
(the t's crossed in the puzzle)
Can you make any sense out of the "t" play?

You're terrific. Many thanks! There's some solace in reading that this puzzle was considered one of the toughest puzzles in the Will Shortz era.
