17 Down is a new word for me. If you want a hint. find a 8 letter word for water which does not move (verb not adjective), remove two letters for saint. then check the remaining word in a dictionary.

Finished (it turned up a day late!), but I'm a bit miffed about this clue:
3d A still strange European book - I can't understand a word (3,3,5,2,2)

My first go at a European might be better known as a double, but I'm sure that he's equally valid as single!

17d with the hints given I guessed it must be to do with ancestry!
A new word for me too.

3dn First two words are an anagram of "A still". The last two words, without the space, mean a (large?) book. The middle word is a European (or an ancient language).

Yes, I know, wally. My point was that the "European" (taken as an adjective) might just as well have been Dutch!

Hi Chris
The French use Chinese "c'est du Chinois !" and so do the Greeks while the Germans use "Spanish" or "Bohemian villages". Just thought I would throw that in :)
