Direct, it means both.

I put DIRECT for this, but I can't really see how the "personal" bit works.

I'm stuck on:
8d Unfamilair clubs in south-east coming to prominence (8) S---E-C-
11a Leader in retreat with old trend returning (9) E---O-I--

I haven't got 5d yet but suspect that'll come to me when I've got 11a.

Sorry, I've just noticed you said 'tips appreciated' - I don't think I'd have come up with a hint anyway!

11, A leader is an editorial.
Retreat is "lair"
"o" for old
"tide" for trend.
Reversed.
