The A came from answer to clue,"Better grey matter gone to the gutter for the sake of bread and butter?"To which I answered ,brAin drain,It fits with everything else ,so I think it is correct.

No need to apologise ,Often I am sure I have right answer only to have it corrected,the earlier superman answer(which I was convinced was correct) is an example,The cane/cain spelling is still bothering me though,like you I have ever only seen cain, spelled that way

yes i know Helena,i was clutching at straws - there may be an answer that has nothing to do with Cain but i can't see one even if both letters were wrong(which they aren't).
very frustating!

Yes maybe we are all hung up on the cane/cain answer ,a friend just called ,He thought maybe bane??
says online dictionary defines bane as murderer/destructor?,Think I shall have to wait for 2 weeks till answers are published
