Hi jazzlover, as the preamble says, each of the entries that traverse the grid has an associated thematic word which together make up two word phrases or names (band, song etc)- there are six of these, one per entry, each a 'variation' on the main thematic colour. You don't need these for the final grid but they bring the whole puzzle together.

I'm going with

RUBY 1Dn (clued at 24)
CHERRY 24 (clued at 1dn)
20 (clued at 25Ac) ROSE
PINK 25AC (clued at 20)
12 CRIMSON (clued at 34)
MAROON 34 (clued at 12)
15 (defined at 22) SCARLET
RED 22 (defined at 15Dn)

The image you end up with is the same as the CH flag, with the colours swapped around.

The theme describes a colour each associated entry has in common, plus what they do when entered (symmetrically)

Agree with all of that - but apart from the cross in the middle of the grid I don't see the other thematic entries adding anything. What am I missing?

I think it is just a play on the word 'cross' to add an extra dimension to the puzzle, meaning the entries cross/traverse the grid. So the 'red' entries 'cross'.

Thanks bozherald. I thought turast meant they formed a shape or something like that.
