If it’s any help the final step of the puzzle requires the middle letter
to be replaced by T, and S - T - S is a real word. It’s an ACROSS clue.

I think maybe it's SIZES > SITES. Each mountain is slightly lower in elevation than its predecessor

Hi Cockie. This looks like a clue from the December 3D Crossword Calendar. Just wondering if you were aware that there is a monthly Hints and Tips for these crosswords which comes about about the middle of the month in question. Hopefully this month's will also confirm the clue answer suggested here.
