Visigoths would have worked if there was a G rather than an L.

I got the 'L' from the last letter in the following cryptic clue---Flower Spray made with first seasons loss of direction (5 letters); to which I thought answer might be APRIL. Maybe that answer could have been SPRIG. That would then make VISIGOTHS fit.
