I think I have completed the grid, but am still uncertain about the extra letters in some clues. In the Contact Sport I have T only, I can't work out what's extra in the Arterial, or the Condition Red, and I'm completely baffled by the Follow East German and the Plant contracted. Very grateful for any help.
Re the "old tennis player", does anyone remember that fantastic Wimbledon semi-final against Vitas Gerulaitis....or are you all too
young ?!
Only got to this today but found it a really good challenge. Almost done but a couple of issues.
I have three letters of a snake starting with N and three possible third letters. I can’t parse so although I suspect it is G it could be I or J.
Stuck on the ambiguity. I have the instruction but can’t see how to apply. BB v X.
Tied up for the rest of the week so asking for help as I will not get another chance to look at this one.
Also not seen any mention of the theme or thematic locations in this thread. Is it obvious? I can’t see it.
Hi Samovar.
Contact sport : from toxin, eg - TE extra
Arterial : anagram road,too,c around I - OO extra
Condition red : red is anagram indicator, T out for time - IN extra
Follow : E, Neu, Sue - EU extra
Plant : Err, MS - RM extra.
Thanks so much, Meursault. I forgot to add the Drug Earned and the Banned Boost, which are also unclear to me. I'm not sure if the Letter from Haifa has a U or a V.
Good example of when a listener goes wrong for me this one. Why not give the answer lengths? Two extra letters leads to too much of a gap between wordplay and answer, especially when the two missing letters are part of a three or four letter part of the word play. Not impressed at all.
Smellyharry - It seems ptomaine was once thought of as the toxic cause of food poisoning but I think that is now discounted in medical circles. But as BRB is primary reference,I see it still gives definition of 'toxin' as 'ptomaine'.
