14D Red rats surround tailless cat. (9) I only have ---M-----. Is it a shade of red or variety of cat?

21 Von is of no relevance. Putting a comma after 'German' might help you. The 'home' is not a house, it's much larger.

14 is the shade of red. The rats are generic.

And to you chrise. It's amazing how one gets stuck up a blind alley.

Ironic really, the composer's original surname was a variation of my grandpa''s surname. Anglicisation varied when they left Russia etc.
