It is fence.
Without giving up the 5 letters, the word that is synonym is:

Put consonants in alphabetical order and then insert the vowels in positions 2 and 4.

Look up the second meaning in Chambers.

I'm not sure if you want hints or just the answer

27a Def. is Native Americans. A word for 'mingle' + an abb. for 'bloodhounds' (not dogs)

28d Starts with C. An obscure word for the human body minus A

I am not seeing this at all. I have all the clued entries but before I looked at this thread I had just two unclued entries ( 1 across and 6 down where there could be no alternatives ) and thanks to the posts above I now have another two. The long one at 43 across is totally eluding me because the obvious answer means I can find nothing for 30 down. At the moment I have ?eas??e for that. ( Conversely the various alternatives I can find for 30 down mean I can't find anything for 43 across. ) Are the nine words suggested by the unclued entries all five letter words which are anagrams of each other or am I missing the point entirely as usual?

Hi always

The unclued answers each have a synonym of 5 letters.

Each individual synonym is an anagram of the same 5 letters.

The easiest one to get to help is 40a- it is the first word of a Beatles song about an author with the c changed to an R (and made plural)
