I know what the missing word is, but cannot find any examples in the grid. Are they in straight lines? Can someone please help me?

No they curve around.

Each quarter of the grid has one example apart from one which has 2.

The relevance of their positioning becomes clear.

Look for cockieleekie which curves around in the grid. Consommé and chowder the same in another part of the grid. That should give you the idea.

You are a STAR!
I've spent all day (and some of yesterday) on this!
Last question could you explain the word play of 6 across: Sister's eating cold orange pickle (6) S?RAP? (it has to be scrape) (Oh, an E has to be removed from the clue)
I need to go to the pub after this - I'll drink to you!
