2 more answers I can't quite parse:

"Jack and Mark take no part" ABSTAIN

Is it do with ABS (sailors), with Jack being Jack Tar? What about Mark?

"Clanger will bring cry of dismay and roar!" BELLOW

I can't see the relevance of clanger here.

"Jack and Mark take no part"
abstain = take no part (def)
AB - Jack (sailor)
stain - mark

"Clanger will bring cry of dismay and roar!"
Bellow - roar (def)
bell- clanger
ow - cry of dismay

There is no need to start a new htread for each clue!

Thank you very much Elle! Point taken re. not starting a new thread each time. I've been trying to keep to a thread per edition of the paper but I can see that I'm cluttering things up. I'll try and batch them up instead (wish I could feel that I was improving, and not having to post as often for help!)

Thank you again for your help, it's so useful.

Sorry, I hadn't noticed that your third thread referred to a different date ...
but the first two were for the same issue, and could definitely have been included together.
It just simplifies things a bit!
I'm always getting "stuck", Trickyvic, and asking for "help"....... but this is how we learn!

Thanks Elle! Yes, I realised after the first two that I should have been including them together.
I've got a few more (working through my backlog!) - does it make more sense for me to batch together a few from different issues in the same month, or shall I stick to separate threads for different dates?

I think providing you quote the paper' s title as your thread reference ie Metro Cryptic, as you have been doing,
and then give the clues numbers as well as writing out each clue (for the benefit of those who don't have a paper) then you could safely batch them?
