I have Lie Low for 11 across - Picked up mattress to stay hidden (3,3) and Ballast for 16 across - The Spanish European blocked heavy material (7) but cannot understand the reasoning apart from maybe Lilo for 11 across.

Answers please.

Picked up can indicate a homophone so lie low looks good.

Las = the in Spanish
Balt = european

Thanks Folks!

First time I've seen "picked up" for a homophone - must remember it (along with "on the radio etc. etc.).

I was meaning to look up "the" in Spanish, but my RAF time should've reminded me of Las Malvinas "D'oh!

I knew he owned a Caribbean island but not its name.
Apparently it's been devastated by Irma.
