11a: The giant out of Gath is "Goliath"
The story of David and Goliath might be referred to as an "epic"?

Thanks Stevie G. Never heard of Etin! Changed my "Epic " answer, and posted off. Usual vain hope of winning!

Neil,
Mattrom came up with "Etin" - alternative speling of "Ettin" - meaning a giant.
This sounds much better than my feeble attempt of "epic"!

The article does say though that "etins" are not always big?

I know it's a bit late now but regarding 11A:

THE GIANT - GATH = TEIN and anagram of ETIN.
