Any ideas if 18a is kick it or kick in? More or less giving up work 4/2. Also 1283:24a: presumably mother-but why. Tea Party host had unusually lost weight.

18 Kick In, work - Kicking would have been 'giving up'. minus the last letter gives Kick In.

24 Matter - weight. From Mad Hatter, tea party host. Lose the 'had' - so M atter.
