Now I am feeling really thick! I don't even understand the preamble and cannot get started!

As an example 6a. Surer river birds (7).

I read the preamble as meaning there is an 8 letter word within this which is an anagram of the answer plus an extra letter.

I cannot see it so I have obviously got the wrong end of the stick.

Can someone give me a push please!

Hi tomsdad,

Take R from SURER and form an anagram to get RUES. R = river and EGRETS = birds.

I had to read it several times to understand what it meant.
One word in each clue is an anagram of the definition with an added letter. THe rest of the clue is the correct wordplay .

Hi tomsdad, I've only just looked at this and a good example which hopefully helps is 34a;

You beat me to it, Orson. For once I am ahead of the game but am stuck at the bottom, so perhaps you can help me:
44a: refer to ules being tapped (5) - which word is the definition( to be an anagram with one letter removed ) please?

I've not got many filled in yet tomsdad, but 23a is the usual mongolian tent with 2 more letters inside.
30a first word minus one letter is the defn
34a same as 30a
21d last word minus ... is the defn
25d 1st word .....
23a 1st word........

Jogamel, 44a is one there is are clashes. Take R from R REFER to get FREE. The answer is an anagram of "to ules". So two letters must occupy one cell.

Beware that in some clues there are two anagrams. One as per the instructions and one as part of the word play. Also the former is not always the full definition.
