PEER REVIEW 293

Welcome to our weekly competition to compose a cryptic clue, to be judged by your fellow contestants.

You may enter as many clues as you like and everyone is welcome. Feel free to explain your clue, if you think it will help, or to ask another setter to parse a clue.

Entrants should vote for their favourite clue. Please include the post number but please refrain from commenting on entries until voting has begun.

Clues should be posted by 1:00 pm BST on Friday, 28 th of July, when voting opens. Voting closes at 9pm that evening.

The entry with the most votes wins and its composer sets next week's competition.

The setter has the deciding vote in the event of a tie and may change the rules if necessary.

The setter will declare the winner and award an online prize.

This week's answer to be clued is:

UKULELE (7)

Have fun and good luck!

tango - congrats again, and just to warn you that Peer Review is traditionally set on a Thursday morning. (The other clue-writing competition, Clueless, is set on a Tuesday and closes on the Wednesday.)

But some traditions are made for breaking! Anyway, if you do not get many entries until later in the week, you now know the reason. On the other hand, you could garner gazillions with the extra time! :)

I'll start thinking ...

SteveA6000 I am only an occasional visitor so completely unaware of traditions!
Apologies to one and all.

PS I know I am away for the whole of next weekend (my wedding anniversary): anyone know how I hand out the prize in that case?

(Just "for fun" as we have friends from Nottingham arriving next Thursday, with dog in tow, to stay for a few days. I've tried to get my mate to have a go at Clueless and/or PR, as he enjoys crosswords, but nothing so far. I'll see if I can entice him to have a go when he's here).

Two French articles on British uniform. It has strings attached (7)

Hi, Tango. Well done again on your win. Generally speaking, if someone knows that they will be unable to adjudicate the following week's competition, they will either not participate or will indicate that their clue should not be considered as an official entry, so I haven't seen the situation arise before. By coincidence I find myself in that very situation. (See my last post).

Don't worry about it. I would just award the prize when you get back. We'll be able to count the votes and either work out the overall winner or, in the event of a tie, your choice of clues for your casting vote.

Have a great anniversary!
