37a) Have C-AG-H-. Suspect WAGS for companions of footballers. Cannot think what goes before or after, or crack this clue at all.

8d) Have IR-IS-NS. Even if bishops is ven, cannot think of the answer.

3d) The mineral seems to be Xelite, and elite fits with the clue, but I can't think of X.

21d) (and many in that corner), so I only know it begins -IT----

8. The bishop is RR, so that'll give you most of the word.It's one that has the most simple treatment (just a letter removed).

1a) Wondered if VICTS is to dispense with for 1ac?

2d) I have - - TI - H -, but if my guess at 1ac is right, the first letter will be N, suggesting Nona for soon backwards. But church music?

3d) Still foxed on the mineral. It ends ELITE, but the only candidates I can think of (nephelite, scheelite) fit neither the clue nor the theme.

A pointer towards any of these might inspire me for the others.

Thanks so much! Antiphon works perfectly, but I'd never heard of it, so it never occurred to me. Same goes for caxons - I'd got cons, but assumed it meant wigs as in berates, because I'd never heard of caxons.
