3d nerita would appear to be the genus and nerite the snail.

I disagree, stevie. I would go with Nerita; "nerite" would be used as an adjective - nerite snails - or collective plural - nerites.

3d Both spellings are shown as nouns in Chambers with nerita given as a genus of gastropods whereas nerite is given as sea snail of the genus nerita.
