I can't fully parse these, so help would be appreciated:-
22 Down - "Investigators given suspicious lead" FEDS
29 Across - "On balance, second precedes first" STOP
(I presume it's a combo of "S" for second and "TOP"
for first, but cannot see where "BALANCE" comes in)
1 Down - "City, say, when it's entered crying"
LAMENTATION

29 Across - "On balance, second precedes first

Atop = on

second letter of bAlance = A + top (first)

1 Down - "City, say, when it's entered crying"

Lamentation

LA = Los Angeles

Say = mention

When = at (what time is the party AT ??)

IE. WHEN is the party

LA ment AT ion

22 fed (given) s(uspicious)

22 Down - "Investigators given suspicious lead"

FEDS

given = fed

(S)uspicious (lead)

Thanks, Shooty and Zozozo - I always get one or two that
perplex in this puzzle - the ATOP answer I had earlier considered, but thought STOP would have won the day!
ATOP is obviously correct.
