Well done, Paul, on your "double whammy" this week. Cheers, Fieryjack. Thanks, ChrisE, for the vote, and SteveA, for the mention. Always appreciated. Pigale, it never ceases to amaze me how you are able to consistently come up with such good clues in what is not your your first language. Good to see you back.

Pigale. You're mastery of English is amazing.
You must have had a good teacher. My French teacher was awful!

Hello Rossim,

Thanks; and yes, I was lucky and had a brilliant English teacher -
two in fact, one from 10 to 14, and the second from 14 till, in my case, 18 - Then I spent a year in an English Technical College, and not only I learnt the secreterial/business studies in English, but since I was the only Foreign pupil, I also improved my English - a lot!

On top of this, I had an aunt who lived in Witney and I spent many
holidays with her, This opportunity to practice in the country what I had learnt at school was a invaluable.

And then my first job in Paris was with American Express - English spoken every day.
And finally I lived in England/Channel Islands for nearly 20 years.

There is no miracle! (particularly since in my days at college, we
were taught much more in depth than now - in France at least)

BTW - Are you still keeping an eye on the owlets? The box is
often empty now, but they are around - a lot of hissing sound.
They are beautiful!

I was born and brought up in north Devon. Our French teacher was a short woman from Glasgow called Miss Hamilton. We couldn't understand what she was saying when she was speaking English, so what chance did we have of understanding her French?

(Although more recently I have become competent in Italian!)

Did you ever learn Italian as such or did you just pick it up through
visiting/living in the country?

I can just imagine what your Mrs Hamilton might have sounded
like speaking French 'her way'!
