Am getting on quite well for me, with the help from this thread, thank you for the help re the excess 'n's'. Have the author/book/characters etc but am having great trouble with 3d, 18d & 22d. Nothing seems to fit with my across clues and I think they are right as they parse well and the correct word is omitted, hefty hints please.

3d exhibited is extra . defn is ugliest
18d teeming is extra. 4 letter synonym for cattle + 5 letter synonym for range
22d enjoy is extra. brush is the defn although I think window wiper would be better. Ely is a bishopric "see" then you need a captain inside.

If you have many letters placed..Chambers word wizard is good.
Bradfords red dictionary is good for the synonyms

Many thanks, had all the to be omitted words but one of the across clues was incorrect and all became clear. Agree about the brush, not a good clue.

That's a bit hard, manic mary. BRB has, for the word needed, "a photographer's roller or brush for squeezing out moisture from wet prints or negatives." Brush is a perfectly good def.
