Unless there is anything deeper, I just went with resistance is represented by R in physics.

I just thought it was Stand= Resistance + By + Me/ Setter's name.

I finished the grid, found the surname but then was stumped for the thematic object. So I resorted to the forum and found it wasn't alone in suspecting there must be a mistake in the location of one of the ringed cells.
Thank you to everyone who has provided hints. I've found the friends but can't locate the d boy or understand what goes in the centre cell. Any help would be appreciated.

I've just found the d boy by completing a diagonal (typical - as soon as I ask for help I find the answer!).
