Looks like it might be "Elevate" as in 'on the rise' but I can't work round the rest of it.

I'm getting 'hitherto' if the main definition is 'previously' but this is a bit of a guess.

merit- deserve
ie - that is ; reversed (on the rise)

Old professors = Emeriti

IE = that is

On the rise means from bottom to top.
= EI

Deserve = merit

Put merit inside EI

Previously = Hitherto

Popular = hit ( it was a big hit. Very popular)

Leading man (of a film for instance) would be the 'Hero'

= put the T for time inside
