You don't have to make sense of 19 A - there will be blanks and clashes in it until you finish off the simile.

28 D. Plain Scottish marshland (5) Mere, plain.
Merse is Scottish marshland, remove the S (the additional letter as mentioned in the preamble).

Has the simile anything to do with a German dog?

Thanks Malone but I'm still not there. I'll dwell on it but I don't think I know the quote. May have to wait till Sunday week for the solution.

Bigf, I've just googled the things you have - the work, the author and the ...German dog. The relevant information, the simile, came up in the fifth listing - that should help you finish this off.

Bigf, glad you got there. I didn't want to just tell you the answer for the final stage, but a big nudge was better than you waiting for the solution!

I have read all the advice given by you Malone and others and Googled everything I can think of but still need a sharp kick in the right direction. I have the author and the line from the across clues, know the work the line came from and I have the name of the work from the down clues and this is where it all falls apart. I have seen references to the dog but can't put it all together, probably because I am hopeless at parsing what have to be the correct answers and therefore am missing quite a no of down extra letters + the fact that 2d & 13a have me stumped. Help!

ManicMary, have you got the German dog? That was the biggest help for me.

2 D. Fish: school arrived. Charr. It's from Sch, school and Arr, arrived. The S, from school, is the additional letter.

13 A. Insolent Scots get angry about women (7) Sweered, inDolent. It's See red, get angry, with W, women.
