i have polo too but don't see it either ....maybe pool = group in competition?
O = 15th letter ??

24 V = See, it's from Vide, Latin. It's in Chambers and crops up occasionally. End = side of field, part of a field ('one of the two sides of a field, court, pitch etc', that is from Chambers).

lens as in contact lens?

I think its Les for The in French, and the N from Note. I could be wrong!

Seems very good to me ... i was thinking le or la and forgot les!

Ok got the line following the simile, got the work in which it occurs, got the author, missing 16d and18d, so haven't got 19ac. Where do I go next please?

That's just a 'hidden in the clue' clue - ignoring one word (redundant as mentioned in the preamble).

My grid is full of scribbles, but 19 A isn't actually anything (that makes sense) until you finish off the simile. That last step means a couple of entries need changed.
