No need to explain 27. I now understand it. Devious use of an abbreviation, though the surface is not all that great, unlike many of the other clues.

Totally agree with your point about morceau, Dryden. And the distinction you make about the syllabic break is the more so in Scotland. As distinct from mare so... :)

I am looking for help to complete one answer and to explain four others. I believe I have the answers for 2d, 16a,38a and 41a but can't unravel the wordplay. And for 35d, even though only one word seems to fit, I can't see why. I hope that some of you are still looking into this forum and can help me to put this Listener away so that I can watch some tennis!

Catkin, it might be a good idea to give the clues for the ones you've mentioned - solvers might no longer have a copy of the paper.

Catkin, hope this helps and isn't too oblique:

2d - to know is WIS, "a" is PER
16a - last letter is E; setter is a dog
38a - worth looking up "GID"...
41a - simple anagram; answer begins S
35d - strip "for" and "baths" of their "clothing", leaving four letters (nice clue, I thought - actually, a lot of these were very good indeed)

Thank you for your hints, Olivercardo. I have only just had chance to check the site. On with this week's challenge.
