Quite a good puzzle but lacking a decent endgame. Some pleasing clues. At least this will not interfere with watching the Lions in the morning.

I found the incorrect letters quite difficult to spot at times. At least there aren't any ambiguities in this one that would nag away at the back of my mind all weekend!

Did this one quite quickly because I spotted the perimeter phrase early which helped a lot on the east side of the puzzle. There is always a slight niggle. I have the only possible answer for 42d and know the incorrect letter - but what letter should be substituted?

Not to be confused with his father, Robert, who won a Nobel Prize, I think the author represented here is one of those who likes to kid people that he's more clever than he is (you don't come across those types very often ?). For a start, his 'law' is wrong, plain and simply wrong. Nowadays I set aside 3 hours to complete the Listener. Sometimes it takes longer, but 3 times this year it has taken less. Irrespective of the time I have taken to estimate that it will take 3 hours.

Hi Mersault. A bit like planning for the comfortable retirement that never arrives!

Hi Notrab, Yes, more and more there are people who are only too keen to estimate how long our lives will be. Of course that's a little different, being based on probability...I'm happiest to keep that kind of speculation at arm's length...

I started a very enjoyable retirement just over 12 months ago and only then discovered the Listener. 100% this year admittedly with help from this forum.
Still on a learning curve but did this one in much less than the usual time. Perhaps the exception that proves the rule.
Or it may be the law is just a lot of pretentious bol.........

I have, on the other hand, frequently fallen foul of the law. Now I have something to prove it to my scandalised friends.

Favourite clue: 41 across. Only clue still resisting full comprehension, despite knowing the answer: 11 across.

Ionacarr, it is c(hillo)ut. Not the most elegant of clues...
