Got a full grid, but can't see the films!
Can someone help please. Thanks

Start by looking in the third row. A very significant word can be seen in the fifth row. Or look up film/stage versions by ...possibly Britain's most famous crime writer.

I also have a complete grid and I've spotted the 25 cells giving the two film titles but they're not symmetrical as the preamble suggests - has anyone else got the same problem or am I missing something?

The preamble says 'symmetrically arranged' - I think that's not quite as specific as true symmetry. The middle part isn't as neat, but the other two rows work ok, I think.

NB. This will be meaningless to anyone not doing the puzzle, sorry. It's really only the highlighting that we're discussing now.

Thanks Malone, all done now.
I had noticed the main words involved, but couldn't tie them together and was fixated ....ON A TRAIN!
I too was not expecting 'approximate' symmetry,

I've a completed grid but the names of the two film versions have to overlap, using 2 words common to both - am I correct?
Also, the missing word is 8 letters, beginning with P (I hope!)

The titles don't overlap in the grid, the last 2 words in the "original" title are the 1st two words in the UK release of the remake.
Word to be highlighted is (7) and begins with c.

Apologies giazzar, I answered from memory without having the puzzle in front of me. You're correct the "missing" word is (8) beginning "p", the (7) beginning "c" appearing in the grid. Sorry for any confusion and I've only now realised what you mean by overlapping.

Thanks ginge - I just wanted confirmation that I was on the right track.

My first attempt for a while.
Got the film and book titles, but can't see 33a or 34d.
First 4 letters of 33 = synonym for easy?(-in-)
No idea on 34, tried various rivers ending ine, but don't seem to be on the right track.
Also, assumed the siege in 7d involves a horse.
