Does anyone know the answer to 3d? Cryptic = Close spinning top to give to small boy. Quick = Close. I have ?p?e?

Opted would fit the wordplay - anagram of top and ed ( small boy)

I am wondering whether it is a typographical error in the paper and the definition should be chose rather than close?

Thanks Jazz Girl. A typo seems the obvious answer as suggested earlier. The cryptic clue clearly points to opted.

More printing errors in the clues :

8d "hold door" should read "hold dear"
38a wondered should be wandered

I spotted both of those typos, funnily enough, but it never occured to me that 'close' was a typo for 'chose'. Duh!! I think I get too many senior moments these days Jazz Girl. I'm trying to improve my performance by doing the Times Quick Cryptic everyday but it's proving hard work.

I think you are doing fine. The Mail is making errors frequently recently.
