Xwordfan, I've got New Wave and Fen (an old boys' cry, something similar - I looked it up yesterday), but I don't know how they work. I've got Bath for 18 A.

agreed ... any idea of the "extras" in these 3 clues?

I have extra words 18 escape, 3 ground, and for 2d superfluous letter u, I think wordplay is w - even - w anagrammed with letter a

But what's going on? I have virtually all the entries but the extra letters and those from the extra words make no sense.

Extra letters are one word repeated 3 times (not English, but is in the grid). Extra words start roo.... (In English)

... I mean one message from the extra words (either first or last letter) starts roo....

I found it a help to photocopy the grid and block out the answers to the clues with superfluous letters. Four foreign words immediately stood out in the acrosses and when I googled them..... it all became clear.

Sorry that was wrong. I meant the words are horizontal in the grid.

Nice puzzle in the end with lots going on. Saw another statue of the 4 in Riga main square a few years ago.
