I'm stumped!
The clue is "what might tempt the answers to starred clues"
the starred clues all have answers that are fish: carp smelt pike bass perch sole,
and the answer is a long string of "I" ending with a single "J"

Lines with a hook on the end?

I've seen a similar ding bat 'hook, line and sinker' but it probably has nothing to do with this clue!
