Kirky, have you sorted out the questions you were asking?

The letters do form the shape, and I have them spelling out a clue to the first word of the phrase (3, 2, 10, 5), starting at the bottom.

Hi kirky
Did you figure out what letters to add in empty spaces?
Unchecked letters are the ones which
5d. BA?T
17a , 21A, 31a. 9d

I hope you got 44a.
The def is guesses for the old-fashioned.

God of war around ED.

thanks.

Sorry. Did not see tomsdad and kirky responses.

tomsdad, where do you start for the clue and do you go left or right for the first 3 letters?

I get CAL or C?S.

Also what is the answer to 24a?

Thanks.

Hi sunray, in case tomsdad doesn't look in again soon;

start at the opposite square and go clockwise.
24a s + ice (a variant of syce)

Sunray, start from the **bottom** and work left, i--.

24a is 's' for succeeded followed by a 3-letter word for reserve. I had to google the word and the second meaning is a word that approximates to the word 'driver'

Thanks tomsdad.

I do see the phrase after I changed a couple of letters.
I had D as the last letter in 37a but changed it to make the
first word of the phrase.

Also 5d became clear.
