Bloody predictatext, no idea where the splurge in the middle of my last post came from, simply anagram.

ginge, this was just great. Immense help.

The anagram solver gave me only one answer made up of five words and when you google it with the surname, the link just pops up.
Have saved it for future.

So my original guess was correct without the anagram.

Now I can relax.

I have come to a grinding halt on this - please can anyone help with a clue as to where to find the surname?

I've still got 2 clues outstanding -
7d. Palin's travelled south lanes? (6) - looks like PLAINS but can't work out the missing/extra letter
21a. Queen of the South tea plats (4) - I have _AT_ and no clue to missing/extra letter

I've probably got some missing/extra letters wrong elsewhere but the surname might help me to finish this off! Thanks

Hi bobbibunny, the surname appears within the main diagonal running NW to SE and includes the 1st letter to 21 across which you have yet to solve.
7d Lanes to Landes

That might be enough to give you a leg up but come back if not.

As usual I am behind everyone else. I have the 7 letter surname in the grid but only 17 of the 22 letters of the anagram as some of my omitted/added letters are not yet paired up.Two answers still elude me - 8a and 9d.
Any help gratefully received!

Gazzar, I didn't bother getting all the extra/missing letters.

9 D. Will's self is transported by shore punt in water once upon a time (7)

Lanched, like Launched. I think the 'n' in 'punt' is superfluous.

8 A. Acton's time, possibly, indicated by this, is short, public library being in revolt (4). Plup, short for Pluperfect (tense). 'Acton's' should be 'Action's'. I'm not sure of the parsing, so won't give you my version!

Many thanks for your help malone.
Plup, eh? There's no mention of one answer being an abbreviaton in the preamble...
I guess it's 'public library' = PL and 'in revolt' = UP.
Surely one has to get the 22 letters of the anagram before being able to replace the surname in the grid?

Plup, without a '.' is in Chambers, so not really an abbreviation that we need to be told about. ('Plup. - with a '.' - is also in Chambers).

I didn't need the letters to do the replacement. I looked at words that could be made if I changed letters in the original surname. That gave me enough to go on with and I saw a possible new surname.

Thanks malone I'll try that.
I still can't parse 21a (QATS) and 24d (NAIVETE) but I guess it doesn't really matter!
