Im going with assistance (20a clue is A protegeeof Shylock perhaps 4 letters ( I had usur but have changed it to heir ) which has e now instead of s for assistance

20a has caused much discussion and I hope I haven't given you the wrong answer for 1d - I don't do the puzzle.

I do because I ge tthe magazine for Television programme times etc
but find the crossword very tricky some weeks.
