9a Persian king backing son, former king in Rome (6). Xerses?
2d International footballer, say, that's sure footed (4). -b--.

XERXES
S(on) EX REX (king in Rome) backwards

IBEX (mountain goat)
I(nternational)
BEX sounds like "Becks", who, I believe, alos played football

Ibex? goats are sure footed but I don't know the footballer.

Of course I know him!

By the way, another answer today was 'seraglio'. Maybe I'm just not well traveled enough but I thought that unfairly obscure.
