I am at a loss as to what the possible answer could be for "Sensible hospital close to lake (4)"

The pattern is _A_E.

It could be HALE, hospital being H but ALE is not a lake, is it?

Or it could be SANE, which I find is a lake somewhere in Canada. SANE is also the acronym for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, who supposedly works in Rape Crisis Centres rather than in hospitals. So where does the hospital part come in?

Any thoughts on this, please?

San is an old word (and one used quite often in crosswords!) for Sanitorium, hospital. San, hospital + the 'e' at the end of 'lakE',

Sorry for not responding to help given.

I get sidetracked quite often reading other posts on this forum, and sometimes it will be some time before I visit my posts, as for example, on this one.

So thanks all for your responses.
