"twenty nine distinct damnations" is from Paul's letter to the Galatians. I can't see how this helps, though!

There is a poem, too, - "Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister" by Robert Browning - with "twenty- nine distinct damnations" in one of the verses.
Not that I can tie this in with the clue........

First time poster here. The answer to 1a is a verse form used by Browning in the Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister: Catalectic.
