John Baker ?

He is an English author who - according to Google- wrote "The Chinese Girl" and "Poet in the Gutter", among others.

Rossim's "John Jakes" sounds equally as good.
He is an American writer, best known for American historical fiction. He has used the pen name Jay Scotland.

How will you know which name to pick, when there turn out to be more than one that would fit the bill?

Elle, u are exactly right and it pisses me off.lol I hate when crossword puzzles use a vague clue about a generic name of a person no one knows who they are w/o looking up, and it it could be multiple people.

Weird clue if it is a crossword, I assumed it was a puzzle/quiz which is why I gave a clue.

No it was a Variety Crossword Puzzle Book. There were 10 of them to solve but I figured out 9 of them. This last one is driving me crazy.
