Is this how the clues break down?

6ac,29 - the key to the eight marked See preamble, presumably.

Eight more - four acc & four down with superfluous words.

So far that's sixteen plus 6ac,29.

The remaining eight makes only 24 plus 6ac,29. Where are the missing six? Are they normal clues?

Or have I finally gone mad?

You haven't gone mad! Some clues are completely normal.

I agree with that interpretation (as I've solved 2 'normal' clues) but it's strange that the instructions aren't tighter. Maybe that last sentence should have read 'Of the remaining clues, eight......'?

14 of the clues (2 of the ac's and 12 of the dn's) are normal.

Thanks, ixion, but I don't understand how the maths works out (based on Ffannie's original posting). Are we double-counting 8 clues somewhere? Or am I being a little slow on the uptake?

The 8 words/phrases listed in the preamble are connected with the superfluous words or phrases in some of the clues so, yes, in a sense, there is a double count,

As tintin says, each of the 8 (see preamble clues) are indicated by..

a) 6,29
b) a superfluous word or phrase from another clue
c) one of the given definitions/wordplay

17 - the first two letters of the answer = Very
the next two = clean
the last is the usual abbreviation.

The answer is where a very famous T????? lives.

PS. I've not given full details as this is such a new clue.
