Thanks, Rossim. I see the 'unprepossessing...' is from a Mail crossword of last year. I wonder if someone has regurgitated the clue, but not in its entirety? I wouldn't think the Mail would reprint an old crossword.

The paired clues weren't just in the Scottish Daily Mail. I recall seeing them recently in the more southern DM also.

@malone: during the Xmas break, the Saturday Mail printed the same crossword, two weeks apart, annoyingly!
