As ever, I've managed to solve the crossword without understanding all the clues!

"Shallow rubbish tips mainly" (4) is apparently GLIB

"Rugby takes place in setting that's very exhausting" (9) is GRUELLING (I think).

Can anyone explain these two?

RU (rugby union) inside gelling (setting)

But I also got glib and can't see why!

shallow - glib
rubbish mainly - bilg(e) reversed

Rugby (Union) - RU
setting - gelling

Maybe 'rubbish' is Bilge, 'mainly' means 'Bilg ' and it tips/reverses, becomes Glib?
