Actually, derryn, your parsing isn't quite right: "barge operator" is the definition; "pub" comes out as bar, and "expression of surprise" gives gee

I'm struggling with one last clue - 8dn: Call for attention suppressed by crook in past - B_Y_N_
I can see an obvious possible solution but can't see how the clue gets us there. Can someone please give a hint to the parsing?
