Could someone please explain 30D, or tell me that the answer isn't grease, such that I can work on finding the right answer.

30d is grease - greaser is a ship's engineer and has the rear 's' scratched to give fat (grease)

Early Christmas celebrations meant a very late start to this one. Nearly there but I seem to lose a cruiser if, as I think, the third group replaces 6d. Where is the other cruiser or am I on the wrong lines?

Caphrist. You are right about third group. Second group should replace 29D. So it’s first letter of this replacement reading upwards.

I don't do the crossword myself (apart from the numerical ones) but do come on to this site on the occasions my husband has been stranded on the rocks, hoping to glean some hints and explanations for him. (Happy to do it, as it's a relief when he finally gets to the end of a difficult one TBH.)
