Hi DeadlyPun, the I is from 23D, Chu(t) and miming.

A couple of typos in my last post, 'if' and 38A, but hopefully the meaning was clear...

Thanks, smartie. I had worked it out but forgot to erase a question mark against the clue, so when I replied to dylan I thought I hadn't fully parsed it.

Incidentally, does finding the location of the naval force require a detailed knowledge of naval history? I've searched the grid for a well-known naval battle that took place in December but I cannot see it.

gitto, that's correct. It's a composite anagram. SEAMEN AT jumbled = the answer + AS A jumbled. Take AS A off SEAMEN AT and see what' left. The word is in Chambers.

planks,

Yes, that's correct. I spent ages trying to work out 5ac and 6d. Actually 6d is relatively simple - poetic term for groups of sailors. The extra letter is L.

Can someone help me with the first group of letters. I've got TEURSC. Is that right?

Demeter, those letters are correct. Since you need another CRU in the grid, those letters need to be formed into a word that has that string. There are two possibilities.
