OK, I have now and at long last got the point and 7 of the replacements.

And I had been going to do a mega tidy-up today!!

Thanks, Syzygy. I gave up on this yesterday with an almost full grid and none the wiser as to replacements. Will finish it off now.
I too loved 28a and had a laugh at 46a. and 26a.

Different and enjoyable, thanks syzygy. Possibly pushing it with 20a as a homophone but other than the lovely 28a* I thought 7d was a nicely hidden container.

That was a bit more challenging than usual, having no indication of where it was going with the theme, but I know some of you tackle much more difficult puzzles.

Got tripped up on a few. Never get too attached to one interpretation of a clue.
I'm not a fan of homophones because they depend on one's accent, but that was fun.
One glitch was the extraneous C in 1A crossing 5D. That was not in keeping with pattern for the others.
