Dryden. For the last bit just remember the pattern used by the puzzle and that the highest first number possible is 25. Just type all numbers in (only 3 possible) one by one. Scroll to the bottom and use the number pattern appropriate to this puzzle. One translates into a very obvious match word.

Yes Dryden, from the NW corner, I thought for a while of QUIT, then maybe QUIZ, but actually there is another one, along the same lines, which is probably yet more appropriate.

I dont think it is just the word that is more appropriate - it is the pattern of the numbers that represent the letters. It is in accordance with the puzzle itself and the corresponding instructions in the pre-amble.

Yes, that's what I did. I didn't really have any doubt about the word it generated, but having discovered earlier that the website helpfully referred to at the beginning of this thread doesn't appear to list all possibilities I thought there might be something else even more apt. For instance, when I entered the fully checked 17a before I had mapped all letters to a number it did not list the clue for 17a, which made me think I'd gone wrong somewhere in my calculations.

Yes, please bear in mind that the online solver only gives solutions with one zero value so is only of value as a checking tool. Having said that it's probably fair to assume that the thematic common word doesn't end DD.

Ah, ok. I only used that web site for the last bit. Maybe that was a lucky choice!
