Thanks syzygy, best puzzle since I've started doing them. Great construction and too many really good clues to mention individually but I started 7across and 14 down.

Yes, that was a good one; slightly more of a challenge than usual.

Can't quite parse the last two words of 16A. The def seems obvious.

Inorganic matter is not ever reported among lab's leaders (7)

I can see the AL, but where do the first 2 letters come from?

Hi Syzygy,
If the def is 'inorganic' it's the first letters of the following words.

Can someone give me a clue to what 'standard procedure' is in 1a?

MO - Modus operandi

I feel dumb about 16A.

Do the Down clues in a sequence across, like any regular Xword.
Mark the bars symmetrically (180° rotation). That will help at the bottom.
Careful with two Italian items down there.
I use graph paper to write out the answers for unnumbered puzzles. Makes it easier to put it together.

Finally got there! Thanks again for posting and the tips. So many good clues. I found this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_American_terms_not_widely_used_in_the_United_Kingdom

which helped with 14a. I felt sheepish when 11d was last in.
17d. of course only works with US spelling.
